iSchools Program
iSchools means "Internet for Public High Schools". It is the most comprehensive ICT program of the government being implemented by the Commission on Information and Communications Technology, Human Capital Development Group (CICT-
HCDG) in partnership with several State Colleges and Universities (SUCs). The Program aims to support the efforts of the Department of Education to (1) make all Public High Schools ICT-enable by 2010, (2) ensure that all high school graduates are ICT literate, and (3)
improve the quality of high school education through the effective use
of ICT in teaching and learning. Its long-term goal is to help the
goverment in bridging the digital divide
by developing an Educational Digital Network that will make public high
school teachers and students ICT literate and give them access to
relevant digital content and applications in education that they can use
to improve learning.
iSchools focuses on strengthening classroom
learning and instruction by expanding access to various sources of
information. In so doing, the project hopes to enhance the capabilty of
public high school students throughout the Philippnes to successfully
compete with thier opportunities in the expanding global knowledge
economy.
Each recepient school will receive 20 units
PCs + 1 server. (15 units + 1 server in the student lab, 3 units for
taculty, use, 1 unit for the library, 1 unit for the Principal's office)
and one year free broadband Internet connectivity . Efforts are being
undertaken to research and evaluate low-cost alternatives for hardware
configurations and various Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) for
education to bring down the investment cost for hardware and software.
In addition, a set of Educator's Trainings
are conducted to equip the stakeholders with necessary skills. The
Educator's training component includes the following:
- 1. Executive Conference/ Workshop to get project buy-in and support from the school's admininstration by discussing program details and benefits.
- 2. Laboratory Management Training Program to equip lab managers and technicians with skills on networking systems and procedures as well as proper equipment maintenance.
- 3. ICT Literacy Training Program, this training is based on the National ICT Competency Standards (NICS) to train faculty members on basic ICT literacy skills so that they will be able to effectively use ICT technology in their classes, lesson preparation, assesment activities/instruments and record updates.
- 4. iSchools Webboard aims to jumpstart on-line learning services in basic secondary education by making use of Internet services for instruction learning.
- 5. Project Sustainabilty Training Program to train school stakeholders on how to sustain the project by thier own means, in order to maintain and upgrade laboratory units
